SPECIAL FAIRMOUNT EVENTS

Crafts Fair

Fairmount Craft Event
What a wonderful way to welcome autumn with the Second Annual Fairmount Craft Fair on Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 11am to 7pm and Sunday, September 14, 2008 from 11am to 5pm between Fairmount and Aspen Streets and 22nd and 23rd streets in Philadelphia.  Booths will surround the block and area restaurants will have outdoor dining.  Rembrandt’s will feature live music on its sidewalk café on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The festival is an open air art gallery featuring many mediums including baskets, wearables for adults and children, clay, sculpture, glass, wood, leather, painting, photography, and of course the always popular jewelry.  The show has something for everyone from a handmade toy for a child to an oil painting for your wall.

A few of our stars include:

  • Local Artist--Rona Fisher Jewelry Design –Primal Elegance in Precious Metals
  • Richard Birkett.-Fantasy Clocks

The show is the brainchild of Jan Zarkin, proprietor of Rembrandt's on 23rd and Aspen. Zarkin, who lives, works and loves the neighborhood sees art as a natural partner for this wonderful, eclectic neighborhood.

Come enjoy the craft show, explore the neighborhood and have something to eat. The show is free and open to the public.   For more information about the craft show, go to Upcoming Events at www.rembrandts.com.

SPECIAL LANDMARKS & ONGOING TOURS/EXHIBITS

By lipby (Flickr)Eastern State Penitentiary Resumes Its Regular Tours
Location: Eastern State Penitentiary:  2124 Fairmount Avenue

When the Eastern State Penitentiary opened on October 25, 1829 it was the world's most expensive and high-tech prison. It had central heating and plumbing even before the White House did.  This massive institution loomed over Philadelphia on a lonely hilltop. Its design unified the world's most advanced building technology with a radical new system of prisoner isolation.

The new prison caused a worldwide phenomenon. As governments began to copy the new prison, Eastern State Penitentiary became the most influential prison ever built.  Now abandoned, visitors can now tour the complex and see where such infamous prisoners as Al Capone and Willie Sutton were once kept.

Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah:
From Slave Ship to Pirate Ship

Franklin Institute
Benjamin Franklin Parkway
May 31 to November 11

The three-masted, 300-ton galley, Whydah, had a brief but violent history in its two year career before it sank in 1717 off of Cape Cod.  Now on view are over 200 artifacts recently salvaged from its wreckage on the ocean floor.  These include real pirate treasure chests, jewelry, coins, gold, and weapons.  They can be seen along with a full size replica of the actual ship in this new National Geographic sponsored exhibit.

Real Pirates takes you back to that tumultuous era of both slavery and piracy.  Built originally as a slave ship in London, Whydah represented the most advanced technology of its day. It was easy to maneuver, unusually fast and, and heavily armed. It was built to transport human captives from the Africa to the Caribbean, but was fated to make only one such voyage before it was captured and turned into a pirate ship.  In its short time, it defeated and plundered over 50 ships.

Learn about life on board a pirate ship and the stories of the men who sailed beneath the Jolly Roger in this fascinating look at Real Pirates.
